Chamber 101

As a new member of the Chamber, I felt it appropriate to take some time away from my clinic to meet like-minded individuals. Having been badgered strongly encouraged to participate in as many events as possible, I decided showing my face would, at the very least, provide some relief from my "unpaid counsel."

Truthfully, I really enjoy meeting other people who are looking to develop and/or improve their business in any way possible. I have a "beg, borrow and steal" mentality when it comes to information and if someone operates in a way that I may be able to turn/tweak to my advantage, I'm happy to give them credit. Probably. If someone asks.

The buzzword for Chamber 101 is opportunity. It's on pretty much everyone's lips. Well, if not "You'll get out of it what you put into it." Much of anything (business, life, all-you-can-eat ice cream buffets) is grasping whatever is in front of you and taking everything you can from it.

I watched Mr. Derreberry speak about Wichita's high ranking in a couple of recent polls, pacing about as though he was happy but not satisfied, wondering to myself if he was going to wear through the carpet to the concrete with the constancy of his movement. As I look back through the several others that talked (have your "elevator message" ready), I think that of all things may best represent what happens in the 90 or so minutes in the board room: If you want the most out of the Chamber, move. Be there. Then be over there. And there, too.

You know, seize the opportunity.
